Important Transition Notice · Converged Telcom

A letter to Converged Telcom customers.

Manufacturer parts are no longer available — but your service isn't going anywhere. The Nakaoka family has been keeping Hawaiʻi businesses connected since 1983. Aryn Nakaoka is continuing that commitment through AlohaTone.

Converged Telcom customers: welcome to AlohaTone.

Dear Valued Clients,

It has been a genuine honor to serve your business over the years. Whether we installed your first phone system, replaced a handset, or kept your lines running through the decades — thank you. That trust means everything to our family, and we do not take it lightly.

The telecom industry has changed dramatically. The manufacturers behind the hardware your systems run on — NEC, Toshiba, and others — have exited the market. Parts are no longer available and support has officially ended. Rather than leave you on aging equipment with nowhere to turn, we want to make sure your transition is handled the right way.

AlohaTone is our answer. Built right here in Honolulu, it is a cloud-hosted phone system with no hardware to replace, no maintenance contracts, and flat-rate billing. Your calls run over your internet connection — clear, encrypted, and managed remotely by the same people who have always been in your corner. For a tailored quote, reach Aryn Nakaoka at anakaoka@trinet-hi.com or 808-356-2901.

We are proud of what Converged Telcom has been to this community. And we are equally proud of what comes next. Mahalo for the years — and for trusting us with what is next.

Why it happened

Two major manufacturers. Both walked away.

The PBX systems most Hawaiʻi businesses relied on came from NEC and Toshiba. Both companies exited the market — leaving customers with hardware that can no longer be serviced or expanded.

End of software support

In May 2024, NEC issued a letter to all dealer partners announcing it was exiting its on-premise UC business outside of Japan. In NEC's own words: "We will not accept any new Purchase Orders received after Dec. 31, 2024… We will also not provide any hardware and/or software support services beyond March 31, 2026." All four milestones have now passed. VoIP is the future — and it has been for a while.

Toshiba America
Wind-down announced · March 21, 2017  ·  All support ended · October 31, 2021

On March 21, 2017, Toshiba announced it was closing its Telecommunications Division globally — covering all Strata and IPedge products. Dealers had two months' notice: final orders accepted through May 22, 2017. Mitel acquired the division to harvest the dealer network, setting End of New System Sales at October 31, 2018 and End of Technical Support at October 31, 2021. After that date, IPedge systems using virtual licensing stopped working entirely — except to dial 911. No third party stepped in to truly continue the platform. Of all the major legacy PBX exits, Toshiba's was the most complete: the manufacturer is gone, the dealer channel contracted severely, and the pool of certified technicians is smaller than any comparable platform.

Progressive Communications → Progressive Telcom → Converged Telcom · Est. 1983

Four decades serving Hawaiʻi.

1983

Wilford & Yoshiko Nakaoka founded Progressive Communications

The oldest locally owned and operated telecommunications company in Hawaiʻi — headquartered in Honolulu, with offices on Maui and the Big Island. Authorized dealer and installer for every major business phone brand across four decades.

Lucent Avaya Mitel Toshiba NEC
2000

3rd largest 3Com dealer in the nation

Progressive Communications ranked as the third-largest 3Com dealer in the United States — a milestone that put a Honolulu-based family business on the national map. 3Com was also among the first manufacturers to deliver VoIP-capable phone systems, making this partnership an early signal of where the industry was heading.

2005

AlohaTone launched — VoIP before it was mainstream

Aryn Nakaoka launched AlohaTone, extending the family's telecom legacy into hosted VoIP, cloud PBX, and managed services — anticipating the hardware-free future that the rest of the industry would take another decade to reach.

~2008

Avaya IP Office — the platform that kept going

While other manufacturers were quietly planning their exits, Avaya introduced the IP Office IP500 — a unified communications platform built from the ground up for VoIP. Over fifteen years later, it is still in active production with ongoing software updates and global availability. Not every manufacturer walked away from their dealers.

2009

The family divides — and doubles down

Progressive Communications, L.L.C. was established to serve government and public-sector clients, while Converged Telcom continued serving commercial and business customers. Two entities, one family, one building. That same year, Progressive Telcom joined AltiGen's partner network — one of the first Hawaiʻi companies to deploy Microsoft-based VoIP — a signal that the hardware era was ending long before the manufacturers admitted it.

2017

Toshiba exits — two months' notice

On March 21, 2017, Toshiba announced it was closing its global Telecommunications Division immediately. Dealers had until May 22 to submit final orders. All manufacturer support ended October 31, 2021. The Strata CIX and IPedge lines — gone with no successor.

2024–2026

NEC exits — the last major PBX manufacturer walks away

NEC issued its exit letter in May 2024. No new system orders after December 31, 2024. Final shipments closed March 31, 2025. All technical support and software updates ended March 31, 2026 — now passed. Systems affected: SL2100, SV9100, SV9300, SV9500, UNIVERGE 3C.
